Henry Latham Doherty was born in Columbus, Ohio, on May 15, 1870, the son of Frank and Anna Lavonia McElvain Doherty. He grew up in a working-class household and from an early age showed little interest in traditional schooling. As a boy he sold newspapers on the streets of Columbus, learning lessons about hard work and self-reliance that would remain with him throughout his life. By the age of twelve he had gone to work for the Columbus Gas Company, bringing his formal education largely to an end.
What school did not provide, Doherty sought on his own. He immersed himself in technical manuals, engineering publications, and company catalogs, teaching himself the science and mechanics behind the gas industry. While many of his contemporaries pursued formal educations, Doherty educated himself through study and practical experience. His determination quickly attracted attention, and he rose steadily through the ranks of the company. Within eight years he had become chief engineer, a remarkable achievement for a young man who had entered the business as an office boy.
As his reputation grew, Doherty moved through a series of engineering and management positions in utility companies across the country. He worked in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Texas, and Colorado, gaining firsthand experience in the rapidly expanding industries of gas, electricity, and public utilities. Those who worked with him recognized both his technical ability and his relentless work ethic. Despite his later success, he never forgot his beginnings and throughout his life preferred to be known as a chief engineer rather than a financier.

In 1900, following the death of George T. Thompson, Doherty was appointed acting president and treasurer of the Denver Gas & Electric Company. The position brought him national attention and placed him among the rising figures in the utility industry. Five years later he organized Henry L. Doherty & Company, a firm that combined engineering expertise with financial management. The business prospered, and Doherty soon began assembling a network of utility interests that stretched across the United States and Canada.

In 1910 he created the Cities Service Company. What began as a holding company soon grew into one of the largest utility and energy organizations in North America. Over the following decades Doherty acquired and developed electric, gas, and petroleum companies serving thousands of communities. By the 1920s his interests encompassed hundreds of businesses and millions of customers.

The petroleum industry became an increasingly important part of that empire after Cities Service acquired the holdings of Theodore N. Barnsdall in 1912. Among the acquisitions were significant Oklahoma oil properties, including the Indian Territory Illuminating Oil Company. Bartlesville soon became a major center of operations, and Doherty devoted considerable attention to understanding the science behind oil production.
Unlike many executives who focused solely on profits, Doherty remained fascinated by the technical challenges of the industries he controlled. In 1916 he established the Doherty Research Company, known as DORECO, in Bartlesville. There he assembled engineers, geologists, and scientists to study petroleum reservoirs and production methods. The work conducted under his direction demonstrated the importance of maintaining pressure within oil reservoirs and helped advance the concept of unitized oil field operations. Although many in the industry initially resisted these ideas, they gradually gained acceptance and influenced oil conservation practices throughout the United States and abroad.
Doherty's commitment to research earned him the respect of engineers and scientists. Over the course of his career he accumulated more than one hundred patents and received numerous honors for his contributions to the gas, electric, and petroleum industries. Lehigh University awarded him an honorary Doctor of Engineering degree, and in 1938 he received the Anthony F. Lucas Gold Medal for his work in petroleum production and conservation.

Despite his growing influence, Doherty remained intensely curious and continually looked for new projects. During the late 1920s and early 1930s he oversaw the construction of the massive skyscraper at 70 Pine Street in Lower Manhattan. When completed in 1932, the building ranked among the tallest in the world. During celebrations marking its opening and his sixty-second birthday, Doherty remarked that he had more plans and ambitions than he had possessed at twenty-two.

Behind the public success, however, he was engaged in a long struggle with illness. Arthritis plagued him for much of his adult life and gradually became debilitating. By the late 1920s physicians feared for his survival. Friends and associates urged him to retire, but Doherty refused. Even as his physical condition worsened, he continued directing his companies and pursuing the causes that interested him most.
His concern for public welfare extended beyond business. During the 1930s he became a leading supporter of efforts to combat infantile paralysis. He helped organize the National Birthday Ball movement in honor of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, raising funds for research and treatment at a time when the disease affected thousands of Americans. The campaign drew participation from communities across the country and became one of the most successful charitable efforts of its era.

By the mid-1930s Doherty spent increasing amounts of time under medical care. Eventually he took up residence in a specially equipped suite at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. There, surrounded by business papers, reports, and correspondence, he continued working almost until the end of his life. Associates, engineers, and executives still sought his advice, and he remained deeply interested in the industries he had helped shape.

Henry Latham Doherty died at Temple University Hospital on December 26, 1939, at the age of sixty-nine. He had spent more than half a century building companies, advancing engineering knowledge, and promoting scientific approaches to energy production. Following his death, he was returned to New York for burial in the family plot at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx.


Today he rests in the Golden Rod Plot, Section 127, Lot 14042, Grave 5. Nearby are members of the Doherty and Morrey families, including his wife, Grace Rardin Doherty, and his adopted daughter, Helen Lee Lassen. The marker that bears his name is simple and understated, offering little hint of the extraordinary life behind it. Yet the legacy of Henry Latham Doherty survives in the industries he helped build, the scientific principles he championed, the research institutions that continue to bear his name, and the countless communities that benefited from the systems he spent a lifetime developing.
